The Benjamin Button Smoothie

True story: the other day someone wanted to know how old I was. They said, “I’m guessing you’re about 18 years old, right?” I just gave them a blank stare, wondering how they could think I’m a full EIGHT YEARS younger than I really am. Then suddenly I realized what the problem was… I eat so many antioxidants that my body is aging in reverse! Just like Benjamin Button, I think I’m getting younger every year! 🙂

This smoothie may be one of the biggest culprits. It has no less than SIX of the world’s most antioxidant-rich foods: blueberries, strawberries, cocoa powder, walnuts, dates, and chia seeds. The powerful compounds in each of these superfoods work their magic on every part of your body. They calm painful inflammation, protect your cardiovascular system, boost immunity, battle cancer-causing free radicals, and (of course) smooth wrinkles to give your skin a beautiful youthful glow.

Oh, and did I mention that it tastes like some kind of super amazingly delicious blueberry chocolate ice cream to boot?

Benjamin Button Smoothie Pool

Makes 1 big smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup frozen blueberries
  • 4 frozen strawberries
  • 1 1/2 frozen bananas
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup walnuts
  • 2 pitted dates
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1+ cup non-dairy milk or water

Step One

Freeze the bananas. You can use unfrozen bananas, but they don’t have nearly the same effect. I always keep a steady supply of bananas in my freezer. They make excellent smoothies, ice cream, and so much more. To do this, simply peel the bananas, break them into 1-inch chunks and add to a freezer bag. They’ll keep for over a week.

Step Two

Add everything from the ingredient list to your blender and blend until completely smooth and creamy. At this point, you can decide how thick you’d like the smoothie to be. With 1 cup of liquid, it’ll be so thick you’ll basically have ice cream. For a something a little more drinkable, add an additional splash of liquid and blend again.

Step Three

For best results, serve immediately in a fancy glass (it always make smoothies taste better). Optionally garnish with some chia seeds, whole berries, or walnuts.

  1. Haha, Andrew when I met you I also thought you were either a senior in high school or no older than 20!! Go Vegan, plant based of course 🙂 will try this smoothie out, looks delish!

    • haha, oh no! This might a great advantage for me in 20 years, but right now it’s more of a problem than anything… Maybe I should grow a beard or something! :p

  2. I am usually not a big fan of chocolate and fruit together, but hey, if it makes the aging process reverse??? I am willing to give it a try! 😉

    • Haha, “these anti-aging claims have not been evaluated by the FDA” 😉 I wouldn’t say the chocolate flavor is too strong, just a subtle flavor behind the berries, but then again, I LOVE chocolate and berries so I may not be the most impartial judge…

  3. YUM! This is going to be become my favourite morning smoothie! Do you also put protein powder in your sometimes? I use Sunwarrior Vanilla protein powder and I find it super chalky. Any ideas on making it taste less chalky? I am so obsessed with your blog that I highly recommend to any/everyone I meet 😀

    • I do often put protein powder in this smoothie. I buy pure brown rice and pea proteins and blend them together for a complete protein and add that along with a little maca powder. I don’t find them overly chalky, but I have heard that complaint from others. Something like this might “hide” the chalkiness because there are many other sweet/bold flavors? Give it a try!

And I’m really glad you like my site! Thank you so much for recommending it! 🙂

  4. I made this today without any cocoa powder. I didn’t have any =( However it was an amazing berry milkshake. Next time I will try with cocoa powder.

  5. THIS WAS DELICIOUS.
It has become my new favorite smoothie!

Also, for me, it was so thick and heavy that it became my dinner instead of a snack!

I can’t wait to make it again!

  6. Hey Andrew I just made this smoothie. I forgot to put the cocoa powder in it will do that tomorrow. It is the most delicious smoothie Ive had….cannot wait for the chocolate version

  7. Just made this, tastes delicious! Only problem is, I blended it for ages but the dates didn’t really blend and I couldn’t get rid of all the walnut chunks. Normal or do I need a more powerful blender? Thanks for a great recipe 🙂

    • Hey Alyssa! That’s an expensive question, haha :). My Vitamix (which costs over $450) completely pulverizes the nuts and dates in a few seconds. It’s a really expensive investment, but one that can literally last a lifetime and (seriously) not a day goes by where I don’t use it for something. My Vitamix is the one kitchen tool that I couldn’t really live without.

  8. Hey Andrew, I’m on Day 2 of the diet…. I’m totally buzzed! I really love the BB Smoothie. Not having any cocoa powder, I broke one square of 70% dark choc into mix and that was great. Finding choc in your brekky really puts a smile on your face! This way of eating is a real find and I can’t wait to try your recipes! My husband is giving it a try too. Thanks so much x

    • Hi Jo! That’s so cool! Best of luck with the One Ingredient Diet and yes, chocolate for breakfast is a requirement in my universe 🙂

  9. Andrew,
This is the first recipe of yours that I actually tried, and I really like it! My teenagers did too! I’ve made it twice so far but I used dark chocolate covered frozen bananas (Diana’s Bananas) in place of cocoa powder. I recently got asked for my ID to see a R-rated movie (I’m 38 years young), so I can’t imagine looking any younger than I do now. But, hey I’m willing to find out. Thank you.

  10. Just made this , delicious, although mine does not look as purple as your picture, but still delicious. Is it supposed to be slightly grainy or is my blender not that good?

    • Hi Rebecca, it’s probably a blender thing. A really high-powered blender can totally puree the walnuts and dates but others may leave chunks.

  11. Yes you look younger but that means you get girls like me who are twenty think they can date you and wouldn’t even worry about age gap being noticeable and since you are a vegan you are even more in demand because c’mon how many of us vegan girls don’t want a good vegan guy who can also helps us become healthier and it being delicious ! Oy if could date you i totally would! I am all about trying new vegan meals I haven’t been vegetarian vegan for very long and it is hard because you are either bombarded by junk or people eating only mono meals or it a super bland super hard to make expensive meal!

    • I like your reasoning! Haha, you’re too nice Abigail 🙂 In terms of being a new vegetarian, I know it can be hard/expensive/bland when first learning this style of cooking, but it gets easier… especially when you have all the great recipes at One Ingredient Chef to help you out! 😉

  12. My wife and I took a day off from our usual kale smoothie to give this a try for fun. What a treat.

This was really sweet and delightful — light and refreshing with a slight chocolate undertone. I’m a fan. The frozen bananas were a great recommendation — they’ve earned a permanent place in my freezer 🙂

    Great recipe!

  13. Hi, Andrew
That’s looking so good & I love how easy it is! I love strawberry & frozen bananas in my smoothie. They’re my most favorite smoothie ingredients. Thanks for putting them together.
