“One Ingredient” Strawberry Milkshake

This morning it was 75º before the sun woke up and 90º before lunchtime. As someone who wishes every day was cloudy and 40º, I was feeling pretty grumpy… until I made myself this one ingredient strawberry milkshake.

It has just 6 simple ingredients and tastes good enough to pass for a “real” milkshake with artificial, animal-based everything. In fact, this is a simple knock-off of my Super Kale Shake (minus the kale and plus the strawberries). The cashews and vanilla are a perfect combination that give this drink such a rich & creamy taste without anything fattening or artificial.

Healthy Strawberry Milkshake

Makes 1 shake

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 bananas – frozen
  • 5 strawberries – frozen
  • 1 cup non-dairy milk
  • 1/4 cup raw cashews
  • 2/3 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon agave (optional)

Step One

Freeze the bananas ahead of time. Simply peel a few ripe bananas, break into chunks, and put them into a plastic bag to freeze overnight. I keep a steady supply in my freezer for milkshakes and smoothies.

Step Two

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. If the drink is too thick, add more milk; too thin, add more frozen banana or strawberry. I typically use almond milk for mine, but any non-dairy milk (soy, rice, hemp, etc.) all work well. If you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, feel free to omit the agave or use something like stevia for a slightly bitter-sweet taste, which I like.

To garnish, you can grate a cashew over the top or slice a strawberry lengthwise and add it to the side of the glass.

Adults?

As I was making this, I thought it would be killer with a splash (or three) of rum for an all natural Strawberry Daiquiri type of drink. Anyone daring enough to give it a shot and let me know how it turns out in the comments?!

  1. Finally someone who loves cloudy chilly days, I was beginning to think I was the only one 😛 BTW this shake looks really yummy!

  2. I live in ireland. The sun was was shining yesterday but it was freezing, then it got cloudy. Mid summer. Conclusion.. I think you would love Ireland! (Or- I think you are crazy!)

I keep frozen bananas in my freezer too- I make ‘banana ice cream’- blend 2 frozen bananas, 50ml non dairy milk. add cinnamon, raspberries (and chunks of peanut butter for optional amazingness.

This drink sounds delish- especially with rum lol!

    • Haha, Ireland looks beautiful! I’d love to come visit 🙂

Ah yes, I’ve made that kind of ice cream before as well, it’s amazing.

  3. This shake is so delicious! I’ve made this for my kids’ several times this week. We absolutely love it as an afternoon snack in this hot weather. Very refreshing!

    • That’s great, Lisa! It’s going to be 100º in Southern California today… I might have to make one myself 🙂

  4. i did indeed adultify this recipe by adding a splash (or seven) of alcohol…i also destupidified 🙂 it by adding honey instead of “it’s-basically-high-fructose-corn-syrup-agave-nectar”

    delicious.

    • Cool! Yeah, I agree about Agave… I’ve actually been working on an article comparing the health benefits of different “natural” sweeteners and agave is really no different than any other sweetener – they all have the same amount of sugar and it offers no health benefits.

  5. Hi Andrew, I’ve found your website just yesterday, but have already spent HOURS reading it (omg, so many healthy recipes, that I’m so excited to try), but the reason why I type this right now is because I just read this – “As someone who wishes every day was cloudy and 40º” – YES, YES AND ONE MORE TIME YES. Feels like everyone around LOVE the heat and the summer, while I just HATE it, seriously. I guess my Russian soul just loves the cold 😀 Btw, thank you for that amazing website! I’d definitely give this milkshake a try <3

    • Hey Viktoriya! Haha, I’m so glad you agree! Cold weather energizes me, but these California summers make my Swedish soul feel like it’s going to melt 🙂

Thanks for the kind words about my website, I’m really happy you’re enjoying it!

  6. Delightful and refreshing! I modified slightly due to ingredient access… Replaces agave with honey (used about half a Tbsp); and water instead of non-dairy milk. Pretttyyyy awesome!
